Hiking experience from the start – First premium hiking trail in Swabian Bavaria.
The DonAUwald is considered one of the largest contiguous floodplain forest areas along German rivers, with significant biodiversity. Over approximately 59 kilometers between Günzburg and Schwenningen, you can experience this extraordinary variety. The contrast between dry, calcareous grasslands, the so-called "Brennen," and the former meanders of the Danube with reed beds and classic oxbows is particularly striking. Looking up through the thick old oaks and deciduous forests gives you a primeval forest-like feeling. Experience both the stillness and the energy of the forest. The landscape of lakes along the trail was created by gravel extraction, but in many places, it has already been reclaimed by creeping plants and water lilies. The trail constantly offers new perspectives and views. Particularly on "der Leite," the edge of the high plateau of the Danube Valley, you can enjoy a fascinating view over the floodplain forest. Far from the stress and hustle of the city, you immerse yourself in the nature surrounding the blue ribbon of the Danube.
ATTENTION! Due to urgent forest work, Stage 1 of the DonAUwald hiking trail is closed until further notice. A detour has been established via the DonauHänge tour south of the Danube. For more information, click here.
Important Notes: The trail is not wheelchair accessible and not suitable for cyclists, as it is exclusively a hiking trail! Cyclists should use the designated bike paths.
Our request: Please allow the nature to rest early in the morning and before dusk. Hiking at night is not permitted. In winter, from November to February, the DonAUwald goes into hibernation and should not be entered. During this time, we allow nature, plants, and animals their peace. Thank you for your understanding!
