An 18.5-kilometer circular route between Günzburg and Offingen through the slope forest.
ATTENTION! Due to urgent forestry work, the section of the tour north of the Danube is closed until further notice. The section south of the Danube, between Offingen and Reisensburg, remains accessible. You can return to the starting point by train.
If you would like to explore the DonAUwald but prefer a circular hike, we recommend the DonauHänge trail that runs south of the Danube. This turns the section into a 18.5-kilometer circular tour. We start at Günzburg train station. The first part of the tour mostly follows the premium path DonAUwald along the northern Danube shore (stage Günzburg - Offingen). After a stop at the Offingen Danube Bridge, half of the route is done. The journey continues across the Danube Bridge. Immediately after passing under the railway tracks, you’ll reach the 100 steps, locally called "Stäpfala." The slope forests of the southern bank, which give the trail its name, are now reached.
After Offingen, we walk a few kilometers along the old Roman road. The route along the Danube was not only important for securing the empire's border but also as a transit route. Another highlight of our circular tour is Schloss Reisensburg, part of the University of Ulm. It’s a beautiful experience to walk through an old alley after descending from the castle along the DonauHänge. Soon, we will have returned to Günzburg.
