4-star ADFC quality route and the classic among river cycling paths
Where the Danube becomes Bavarian
Along this 100,000-year-old cultural corridor, you will experience spectacular tranquility and hidden beauties. This section of the Danube Cycle Path between Neu-Ulm and Höchstädt offers historical, culinary, and natural delights. Along the banks of the Danube, you’ll find the cultural wealth of significant cities as well as the lush splendor of untouched nature. The picturesque towns of Leipheim, Günzburg, Gundelfingen, Lauingen, Dillingen, and Höchstädt are strung together like pearls on a necklace. These charming Danube towns offer a wide range of cultural and historical highlights. The imposing buildings of various renowned architects alone testify to the importance of these cities throughout different epochs. But also, the numerous traces of ancient cultures underscore the region's long historical background. The riparian forest, with its unique diversity of rare plants and birds, will make nature lovers' hearts beat faster. "Water on" is the call in the idyllic lake landscape of the Swabian Danube Valley, inviting a refreshing stop. A cycling tour along the Danube is a treat for the mind, body, and soul. Give it a try!
The cycling route alternates between bike paths, quiet secondary roads, and unpaved field, forest, and riverside trails. Only rarely will you ride on busy roads. The route features very few inclines. In Germany, the Danube Cycle Path is consistently well-signposted. At the signposts, you'll find additional markers with the Danube Cycle Path logo. There are also directional signs with green arrows. Ample accommodation options are usually available, but during the main season from May to October, when many cyclists are on the road, it's recommended to book in advance. Notably, there’s a parallel train service from Ulm through Günzburg and Dillingen to Tapfheim, allowing easy access to the Danube Cycle Path from many points.
